Are Your Kids Safe?
Discover the Hidden Violence Creeping in Your Home
Unknowingly,
we all have allowed violence and fear into our homes. It’s hidden discreetly in
the most common places. And I too have fell victim to this insidious predator
creeping into the lives of my family. One night while getting the kids ready
for bed, like most parents, I read to them the original
version of the Three Little Pigs. But during the quiet still night, suddenly they
woke up running, screaming and scared of the “big bad wolf.” Abruptly awakened,
I was overcome with fear. Hearing their screams, I was shaken and startled… but
once I came to my senses, I realized my
children were terrified of the violence in the original version. That night, I
discovered the last thought I gave my children was violence - the big bad wolf
eating the little pigs or getting burned, boiled or even shot. Regrettably, I
assumed this children’s story was appropriate but instead, I allowed violence
and fear into my home - into the minds of my young children.
Since then, I found out folktales and fairy tales like The Little
Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and
Gretel… were never intended for children but generations long ago, these
stories were for adults. And sadly, these stories filled with negative violent
images are read to children every day creating fear and perhaps, bullying too. Embedded
with negative images somehow, these stories are considered classic children’s
literature. But is this suitable for children?
But
wait, here’s a thought - have violent images become the acceptable norm in our
homes…? Are we immune to its subtle influences and overtime
have become desensitized to violence? Turn on the television, listen to
music, play a video game or read
a book… rage, anger, and violence are all too common and then, we wonder what’s
happening with our kids. According to
the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry:
-
On the average cartoons have up to 20 violent acts hourly.
- By age 18, the average child has viewed about 200,000 acts of violence on television alone.
- Television programs display 812 violent acts per hour.
-
Media violence is especially damaging to children under eight because they cannot distinguish fantasy vs. reality.
-
Children who see a lot of violence are more likely to view violence as an effective way of settling conflicts.
-
Children exposed to violence are more likely to assume that acts of violence are acceptable.
Disturbed by the trauma, this was a turning point - a wake up call for me.
And that’s what I did, revised The Three Little Pigs into a friendly positive
story. The new revised book offers timely helpful parenting solutions and
insightful positive images. It is an alternative to society’s growing violence
and the minds of future generations of children. The time has come for an image
makeover - from negative to positive. Children
mimic what they see so, let's check and monitor what
they see and hear – creating happy... with positive images! Images create imagination - imagination creates
thoughts - thoughts create behavior - and behavior creates our destiny.
